Selective separation of neodymium(III) using dual function DEHPA-menthol deep eutectic solvent

Neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) are valuable lanthanide metals used in modern technologies, particularly in permanent magnets. However, their separation is challenging due to their similar properties. This research explores the use of di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) ligand as a part of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) to rapidly enhance lanthanide extraction efficiency. The prepared DES enables effective separation of Nd from Dy after stripping with nitric acid, demonstrating good DES recyclability. This work highlights a potential application of using this DES in the recovery of lanthanides from NdFeB magnet waste.
