Reusable Hydrophobic Solvent for Iodide Extraction

Iodide is widely present in natural and industrial water sources and can contribute to the formation of potentially harmful iodinated disinfection by-products during water treatment. Developing efficient technologies for iodide removal is therefore important for protecting water quality and environmental sustainability.
Researchers from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University have developed a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) based on tetrabutylammonium chloride and thymol for efficient iodide extraction from water. The developed solvent enables rapid iodide extraction and can be regenerated through repeated extraction–stripping operations, reducing chemical consumption and waste generation. This work highlights the potential of HDESs as sustainable solvents for water treatment and resource recovery applications.
