We developed a new test strip made from nylon coated with a special liquid called a deep eutectic solvent (DES) – an eco-friendly alternative to toxic organic solvents. This strip helps detect hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], a cancer-causing pollutant often found in industrial wastewater.
Why DES? Because it’s safer, greener, and does the job just as well – if not better!
Our method is simple, portable, low-cost, and doesn’t require fancy instruments. It can detect even tiny amounts of Cr(VI), meeting WHO and EPA safety standards.
This is the first time anyone has successfully used DES to dissolve the color-changing chemical (DPC) on a nylon-based strip for this purpose!
A greener way to protect our water – from lab to real-life applications. This project was carried out as a senior project by our talented undergraduate student. We truly admire their capability to carry out research that meets the standards of international scientific publication.
