Colorimetric detection of arsenic(III) using iron(III) assisted tartrate stabilized gold nanoparticles

Arsenic in water is a serious environmental concern because it is highly toxic. To help detect this dangerous substance, a new and easy-to-use method has been developed under the Environmental Analysis Research Unit (EARU) for the colorimetric detection of arsenite (As(III)) in water using ferric ion (Fe(III))- assisted tartrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles. When arsenic is in the water, these particles clump together, causing a visible color change from red to dark blue. This simple and low-cost test does not require any advanced equipment, making it practical for quick and effective arsenic detection.
